SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION

In September 2023, after an incident of baby green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) disoriented by lights on a beach in Bayahibe/Dominicus, FUNDEMAR decided to become more actively involved in the conservation of sea turtles in the area.

In the area, the presence is known mainly of green turtles and hawksbill turtles ( Eretmochelys imbricata ), nesting on the coasts of the Cotubanama park, which the Ministry of the Environment monitors.

Hotels in the area are already active in conservation issues, promoting good practices through the Blue Flag program. FUNDEMAR is thus committed to advising hotels on the application of good practices in the event of turtle nesting on their beaches, supporting monitoring and recording and monitoring the different nests.
